Improvement Plans for Uptown Butte

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

County officials are busy drafting plans to improve mobility in uptown Butte. The blueprints are still being put into a final draft but the goal is set.

"To make uptown Butte a more walkable, friendly place and when I say walkable that doesn't mean just on your feet it means all those things I just said, bikes cars and pedestrians," said Community Development Director Karen Byrnes for Butte-Silver Bow.

The main focus of this comprehensive project is to improve the flow of traffic in the uptown area. It will involve removing and adding stop lights in certain areas, protecting foot traffic and creating bike lanes.

The plans consider reverse angle parking which allows for more parking spaces but the idea has been met with some opposition. Byrnes says if reverse angle parking is implemented they will work on having a demonstration area to familiarize people with this new method.

"One movement to back into a space just like a parallel parking movement and you're done but when you pull out you can see everything in front of you and it's a lot safer when you actually pull out of the space."

Once the draft plans become final they will be presented to the public for comment. A preliminary draft plan has been released to the public. You'll find the complete draft plans here.
