Home Depot investigating potential credit and debit card breach

Posted: Updated:
KHQ.com - Home improvement retailer Home Depot says it may be the latest victim of a massive credit and debit card security breach.

The Atlanta-based company confirmed Tuesday that it is looking into "unusual activity" and it's working with both banks and law enforcement in an investigation.

"Protecting our customers' information is something we take extremely seriously," a company spokeswoman said in a statement.

"We are aggressively gathering facts at this point while working to protect customers."

The company did not provide any further information.

The potential breach was first reported by cyber security website Krebs on Security.

The security site says it spoke with multiple banks, which said they "are seeing evidence that Home Depot stores may be the source of a massive new batch of stolen credit and debit cards."

The site reports the breach looks similar to the attacks that hit Target, P.F. Chang's, and other retailers.

At this time, Home Depot says it's still gathering the facts - including a list of stores that may be affected. Krebs reports the breach may be extended across all U.S. locations.

According to the company's website, there are 13 locations in eastern Washington and north Idaho.

SPOKANE, Wash. - There's a new fundraising effort to help the victims of the shooting at Freeman High School. About a dozen volunteers, many with ties to the school, came together on Tuesday night to make metal bracelets. They hammered the words "Freeman Strong" onto the front, with a volleyball and a cheerleading megaphone on the sides -- since the three girls who were wounded in the shooting were on the school's volleyball or cheerleading team.
