Gardewine Named NWL Pitcher of the Week

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Northwest League announced that starting pitcher Nick Gardewine of the Spokane Indians has been named Pitcher of the Week for August 18-24. This is the second time this season Gardewine has earned the award, with the first honor coming for the week of August 4-10.

Gardewine was dominant in his start on August 20 against the Hillsboro Hops. The right-hander from Effingham, Ill., tossed seven shutout innings while matching a season-high eight punch outs. Gardewine, though, has been on a tear his past three starts: in 18 innings pitched, he has allowed just two runs while striking out 17 batters and issuing only three walks.

The Spokane Indians have won six Northwest League weekly honors in 2014, highest amongst all NWL teams. Jose Trevino (June 30-July 6), Seth Spivey (July 7-13) and Zach Cone (July 14-20) have all received Player of the Week honors. Gardewine (August 4-10) and Richelson Pena (August 11-17) have been named Pitcher of the Week.

Shane Hoelscher of the Tri-City Dust Devils earned NWL Player of the Week honors.
