SPOKANE, Wash. - After dealing with the state's largest wildfire that burned through hundreds of miles of land, Okanogan County is now dealing with something else. A landslide swept through, completely closing roads, and trapping people in their homes. “With all that vegetation gone, the water just runs off and creates a large pile at the bottom of the hill,” said U.S. Geological Survey Geologist Tom Frost.

UPDATE:
OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash.- Officials in an area of north-central Washington scarred by massive wildfires say heavy rains unleashed mudslides that damaged or destroyed 10 homes and blocked highways.

Okanogan County Emergency Manager Scott Miller told the Wenatchee World that authorities are still trying to identify everyone affected by the Thursday night storms. He said the Red Cross is on standby if shelter is needed.

Resident Janie Lewis stays the storm left two feet of mud in her home. She says she and her husband are grateful to be alive and thankful for the neighbors who arrived Friday to help clean up.

There were no reports of injuries from the slides. A section of one state highway remains closed.

The National Weather Service says a few showers blew through the area Friday but nothing like Thursday's storms.

Previous coverage:

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers tells KHQ that as of 5:00pm Friday evening, Highway 20 is back open and no homes are threaten after numerous mudslides washed out roads and stranded drivers Thursday night and Friday morning.

Rogers said Highway 153 is still closed after some extensive damage, though no motorists are trapped.

There have been no injuries reported, and Rogers said after the largest wildfire in Washington's history and this latest round of mudslides, the people of Okanogan County are resilient and will get through this latest devastation.

Previous coverage:

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers tells us flash flooding and mudslides are shutting down roads and trapping people across the burned out region of his County.

The burned lands from the Carlton Complex fire are unable to absorb rain water, resulting in flash floods.

Sheriff Rogers tells us roads are washed out and shut down on the west side of the burn along Highway 153 and to the east along Old Highway 97.

Sheriff Rogers is warning people to stay home and not leave unless flooding puts them in imminent danger.
There are currently no reports of any injuries or deaths, but Sheriff Rogers says people are still currently trapped between the slides.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash.- A Washington state trooper says floods and mud slides triggered by heavy rain on wildfire-burned terrain in north-central Washington have blocked portions of two highways, stranding some motorists. No injuries have been reported.

Trooper Darren Wright says five to 10 vehicles were cut off by mud and slides Thursday night and were temporarily unable to get off State Highway 153, which runs through the Methow Valley. He says those vehicles are in a safe area. It wasn't immediately clear how long they might be stuck.

Elsewhere in Okanogan County, the state Transportation Department said a 24-mile stretch of State Highway 20 was closed due to mud and rocks across the highway. Local road detours were available there and crews were working to clear the debris.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning as thunderstorms moved through the area Thursday night. Meteorologist Matthew Fugazzi says more than an inch of rain was reported in one hour near Twisp, Washington, in an area burned by the massive Carlton Complex wildfire.
