Timber Product Industry Working Under Capacity

Posted: Updated:
MONTANA -

Montana mill laborers ask lawmakers for help to speed up timber production, which they say is driving up prices.

Montana's timber products industry is operating at approximately 65% capacity.

During this morning's visit to Montana Reclaimed Lumber in Gallatin Gateway, Congressman Steve Daines says he would like to see the timber industry operate the way they did before international transport regulations took effect.

"When I was growing up we had 30 active small mills; today we have only 11. So we need some reform to the way the regulations work so that we can get our timber industry back operating again instead of watching our timber burn. I think we can log some of it and create some more jobs in Montana."

Just last week the Montana Wood Products Association said they would like to see legislation that would free them from stalled timber production and allow them to keep up with the rise in housing starts and building.
