Post Falls Soap Box Derby team has hopes of becoming grand champs

Posted: Updated:

POST FALLS, Idaho- ....And they're off!!!

A race unlike any other, because crossing the finish line is a small part in the overall competition that has come to be known as the Red Bull Soap Box Derby. The race tours multiple cities throughout the country looking for the best and most creative teams. The next stop, Seattle.

Hundreds apply, but only 40 were chosen, one of those teams being from Post Falls, they call themselves the Idaho Spuds. Mark Pea, the team captain explains the application process is as simple as jotting down a sketch on a napkin, literally.

"They want to see creativity, they want to see some speed and they want some showmanship, so you have to have a little bit of that charisma all in a napkin drawing."

And as much as crossing the finish line is a must, so are theme and costume, and team spuds have tapped into the childhood of many by opting to dress their driver up like Mr. Potato Head, complete with removable parts.

"I anticipate those falling off as he's going down the hills," said Matt Peterson, the team's prop designer.

The team still has a lot of work to do before the August 24th race day, the skeleton of their car has been built, but they're working on making it look like the character "RC" from Toy Story.

"We probably put this Chasie together in like, 20 hours, it took no time at all. Now we just have to deck it out," said Pea.

And then it's off to the races.
