Wise River Murder Investigation

Posted: Updated:
BEAVERHEAD COUNTY -

The investigation continues on the side of Beaverhead County authorities to get to the bottom of what caused the death of Mark Robert Mullen.

It took only a few days for a pair of accused killers to land behind bars.

County Attorney Jed Fitch said, "A very quick close to a very difficult case. Saturday he finds out there's an unidentified deceased body and by Tuesday evening they've got suspects in hand and I think that's remarkable and should be commended."

The suspects are 29-year-old Christopher Lee Stiles and 49-year-old Sandra Lee Ann Cantrell. They were identified by law enforcement early on in the investigation which aided in the swift arrests.

“The agents up there in Missoula right now are finishing up on some other witnesses, interviews with other witnesses and processing the motorhome for any other evidence," said Sheriff Jay Hansen.

Sheriff Hansen says witness information plays a critical role in catching the criminals.

"You have to seek out your witnesses, a lot of times there's no evidence."

And it seems in this case eye-witness testimony may have been a key element in narrowing in on the suspects. It turns out our anonymous source we spoke to on Monday did in fact come face to face with the alleged killers.

"Jokingly said to one of the rangers that guy you're looking for wasn't by the name of Chris was it? And then that's when that interview started."

The dead victim was found along the Big Hole River in an area of willow trees. Police have not yet released the official cause of death but we do know a fight broke out. Based on information we’ve received it sounds like Mark Mullen was beaten and then shot.

Charges in this case should be filed soon by the county attorney at which point Stiles and Cantrell will be transported to Beaverhead County to answer the allegations of homicide, tampering with evidence and theft of property.
