So Good: Herbert Gamboa

Posted: Updated:

There's some new faces lining up at linebacker for the Grizzlies this season. One of those guys is Herbert Gamboa, who has been killing it so far in fall camp.

"He is fast, he has gotten to be 220-222 pounds, he is strong, he had a great summer in the weight room and I think Herbert is going to have a breakout year I really do," said Griz Defensive Coordinator Ty Gregorak.

Gamboa played his first two seasons as a back up safety because the Griz were thin at that position. He is now back at linebacker, the position he was in high school. He's put on a little bit of weight and says the position switch wasn't too difficult.

"The change wasn't too big mostly in the hips and being a little quicker. I'm glad to be back at backer because I'm more natural at that position," said Gamboa.

"He's finally playing the position we recruited him to play. He was an outside linebacker in high school, great speed in high school, he ran a 10.61 I think which is fast, really fast for a linebacker," said Gregorak.

Gamboa is one of four Griz linebackers who are converted safeties which means they take pride in one thing in particular, their speed.

"Just try to play fast and aggressive that's how you play the linebacker position. Have good eyes, good hands, good feet and play fast, the faster the better," said Gamboa.

The linebackers have some big shoes to fill. Brock Coyle and Jordan Tripp are currently playing in the NFL, something Gamboa says motivates him.

"You see those guys the last couple days balling out in the NFL and it makes me want to play the best that I can here and keep that tradition of having good linebackers," said Gamboa.

Gregorak says having Gamboa and speed at linebacker will be a great match up against Big Sky offenses who have predominately moved to the spread forcing backers to cover wide receivers and running backs.
