Fire Truck Involved in Fatal Crash Was Recalled

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN - The same model of truck fire chief of Three Forks, Todd Rummel, was driving on June 19 was recalled back in 2005, after several accidents involving the same drive shaft failure. ABC FOX Montana looked into the recall and what is expected of fire departments when it comes to truck maintenance.

The front drive shaft failed in several spots on the night Rummel and a family of five were killed in a head on crash. Jason Shrager, the fire chief of the Bozeman Fire Department, who can only speak for his department, says proper truck maintenance is crucial.

"The Bozeman Fire Department has an aggressive preventative maintenance program, we do a daily truck check, we also do a weekly more in depth and then we do a monthly that is more in depth then both of those," said Shrager.

The 2002 International 4800 fire truck was placed on recall back in 2005 for very similar accidents involving the failure of the front drive shaft. Most recently, in 2011, an accident in Nevada involving the same truck was reportedly caused by a similar mechanical failure.

"The only way we know we can count on that piece of equipment is by becoming familiar with it and to make sure we are maintaining it and up keeping it to the standards set forth by the manufacturer," said Shrager.

At the Bozeman Fire Department, fire trucks are checked daily to monitor any kind of normal wear and tear. There's also a weekly check.

Shrager said, "The weekly's we do a little more in depth we look at those same things plus into the compartments and specific pieces of equipment that are on the rig."

On top of the daily and weekly inspections, monthly checks also take place.

"Monthly's we are looking at oil leaks and loose nuts and bolts and oil levels and fluid levels. Anything in the chassis or in the motor system that doesn't look right," said Shrager.

Shrager, who did not choose to comment on the accident involving the Three Forks fire truck, says, due to the extensive inspection process at the Bozeman Fire Department, they rarely find any major issues.

ABC FOX Montana did reach out to the Three Forks Fire Department after the findings into what caused the deadly June collision were released this morning. Calls were not returned.
