Looking Past Prescription to Treat Mental Illness

Posted: Updated:
MONTANA - We know Robin Williams battled with depression throughout most of his career.

The traditional go-to treatment for mental illness is often prescription drugs but there is a range of treatment that can have a major impact on the quality of peoples' lives.

Comedian and actress Katie Goodman says Robin Williams was long aware of the power comedy has on healing others.

"He was actually attracted to things like Patch Adams which is the doctor who is funny with the kids. So he got the idea that comedy does heal and I think someone at that level gets to choose the work that they want to do and for him to just really understand what an effect comedy can have on health and mental health was so obvious," said Goodman.

Comedy is just one of the more non-traditional outlets people lean on to cope with mental illness.

Other activities include drawing, painting and listening to classical music.

Some mental health clinics and nonprofits are utilizing outdoor activities for therapeutic medicine, such as fishing, which focuses the mind away from everyday troubles.
