Mountain Line Bus Services To Be Free To Riders

Posted: Updated:

Mountain Line Transit is going zero-fare, meaning riders soon get to use the buses for free.

The announcement was made Tuesday at the Downtown Transfer Center. Groups around the city donated about $460,000 to a three year zero-fare trial period to make up for the money lost in ridership.

The largest donation comes from the city, with $100,000 each year of the trial coming from the city's general budget.

“We think what it does is pay its way down the line many times over. We take vehicles off the road, we keep the air cleaner, we have less maintenance to do on the streets, and we have fewer bridges to build. Last longer fundamentally, we have more people with better means of transportation,” said Mayor John Engen.

The three year trial period starts January 5. It's expected to bring up ridership by 45%.
