Mechanical Failure to Blame for June Highway 12 Fatal Crash

HELENA -

Investigators determine mechanical failure in a Three Forks fire truck caused a fiery crash on Highway 12 that killed six people on June 19.

At a press conference in Helena Tuesday, Montana Highway Patrol Deputy Chief Greg Watson said mechanical failure caused the front wheel of the fire truck to lock up. The driver, Three Forks Chief Todd Rummel, then lost control and collided with a westbound Chevy pick-up. Both vehicles were immediately engulfed in flames. Rummel and the family of five in the pick up were killed.

"I think this is a very violent accident that ended in fire," Watson said.

Rummel had been driving the engine back from East Helena, where it had received repairs. Watson says the mechanical failure the vehicle experienced was not related to the repairs.

Six people investigated the accident and MHP plans to do a follow-up investigation to make sure nothing was missed.
