Work to Begin on "M" Trailhead Makeover

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

The trailhead of one of the state's most popular hiking spots is getting a facelift.

Work will begin in the coming days on the area leading up to Mount Sentinel's "M" trailhead. Construction will last several weeks and the trail will stay open during this time. Improvements will include a sitting wall and a space to post information for hikers.

With up to 1,000 hikers taking on the trail every day, the goal is to improve the flow of traffic and access at the trailhead.

"We're the only university, I think, that has a mountain on campus. People don’t always know the rules or know how special of an ecosystem this is, the Inter-mountain Grasslands, so we just want this to be a more welcoming approach for tourist and parents and all the out-of-towners," said UM Natural Areas Specialist, Marilyn Marler.

The $20,000 project is being funded entirely by donations. Folks who donate $500 or more will get an engraved capstone at the new trailhead.
