WITNESSES: Woman who threw baby over fence said her son was the devil

SPOKANE, Wash. - Witnesses say a woman who threw her son over a fence and down the embankment was reading scripture and said her son was the devil. Witnesses also say she counted to three before throwing him over the fence, then just sat there while others rushed to help the child.

25-year-old Destiny L. Ahenakew is charged with throwing her 14-month-old over a fence and down an embankment near the Spokane River, according to Spokane Police. They booked Ahenakew into the Spokane County Jail Saturday. The baby, who fell about 50 feet, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

It started Saturday afternoon when Ahenakew walked into a home near the intersection of Cochran and Summit, according to Spokane Police. A man working inside called police because he was worried Ahenakew had nowhere to go. He then watched Ahenakew toss the infant in the air over the fence. The child landed against a tree on an embankment below.

Another witness ran down and grabbed the baby, who was admitted to a hospital for observation.

Ahenakew faces one charge of 1st degree child assault.
