False Immigration Lawyer Pleaded Guilty

PASCO, WA- Jose Antonio Martinez was sentenced to 364 days in jail for posing as an immigration lawyer.

Martinez is known as Tony Martinez and was unlawfully posing as an immigration lawyer and taking advantage of immigrants.

Martinez also had several stores set up for business and used those to collect immigration money.  If immigrants did not pay, he would threaten to call the authorities on them and have them deported.

Attorney Tom Roach feels that this is not the last of these kinds of cases.

“The Tony Martinez's of the world are still going to be here.  There's going to be a lot more of them because there's going to be a lot more opportunity.  There's going to be a real explosion in the number of people that need immigration help here in the next few months and a couple of years,” said Roach.

Roach believes that many immigrants are being tricked because of the term “notario”, which means a lawyer in some countries, but has a different meaning in the United States.
