World Breast Feeding Week

This week is worldwide breast feeding week to promote awareness about the benefits of being a nursing mother. The idea behind this global celebration of breast feeding is to encourage moms to feed their babies breast milk over formula.

Medical professionals say newborns and growing babies who were provided with mother's milk have better overall health throughout their lifetime than those who were not breast fed.

Sue Burton, a Certified Nurse Midwife, says, "We have less risk as we get older if we're breast fed for diabetes, for heart disease, for obesity just because of how our body learned to process those things by being exposed to breast milk."

Experts say mothers who breast feed have a reduced risk of developing ovarian and or breast cancer. According to midwives a person will receive the greatest benefits if they are breast fed for the first two years of life.
