NBCRightNow.com - They called him Mr. Hydroplane. Ken Maurer died just this week and he leaves behind a legacy we still see every year in the Tri-Cities.

Over at the Water Follies office there were plenty of nostalgic moments Thursday as they sorted through some of the old pictures and programs that Maurer had helped make possible.

Maurer loved the original boat races over in Pasco at Sacajawea State Park in the1950's and he was the first to think, ‘why not make these boat races an entire community event’. He brought the big boats to the Tri-Cities in the 60's and made sure that over the next three decades Water Follies would grow to be something our community could be proud of and known for. His friends call him the brains of the operation.

"Kenley was the visionary that really made it work. His vision of what he wanted was what he passed on to all of us that eventually got on the board and helped out and did what Kenley wanted done usually," said Chuck Keltch who has worked Water Follies for over four decades himself.

Maurer died this past Monday at the age of 89 in Pasco. He was born is Spokane but had lived in the Tri-Cities since the 50's. His vision was to make Water Follies a family friendly event and the people at Tri-City Water Follies say it's a legacy they will continue.

BOZEMAN, Wash. - There are things from my childhood that would have been useful for me to remember. Anything beyond 8th grade math comes to mind. I'm constantly forgetting important things my wife is telling me, but ask me to quote every Emilio Estevez line from Young Guns and I'm alright. It's been a life-saver on more than one occasion.
