SPOKANE, Wash. -- A trio of local University basketball teams have been named among the best academically by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Wednesday, July 23.

Below are the releases from Gonzaga, Eastern Washington and Whitworth highlighting the academic accomplishments of the players from each program.

Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team is among the recipients as The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Wednesday announced the second annual 2013-14 Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics. These awards, earned by more than 125 colleges and universities, recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2013-14 season.

The Bulldogs, the only West Coast Conference team to receive the honor, compiled a 3.155 GPA this past academic year.

In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA Division I and II, must count the grade point averages of all men’s student-athletes who competed during the 2013-14 season.

With a team grade point average of 3.07 in the 2013-14 school year, the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team has been honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award announced Wednesday, July 23.

"I am really proud of the hard work performed by our team in the classroom," said Eastern head coach Jim Hayford. "We want our players to be over-achievers in every area of life. The classroom is the foundation of achievement for anything our players accomplish."

The award was won by 126 colleges and universities for having have team cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and above for the 2013-14 season. Teams in NCAA Division I, II, II and NAIA Division I and II were eligible. Earlier this week, the NABC announced individual "Honors Court" recipients, and Eagles Tyler Harvey, guard Daniel Hill and forward Martin Seiferthwere recognized for having a cumulative grade point averages of 3.20 or higher.

Besides Harvey, Hill and Seiferth, other players on the 2013-14 team included Drew Brandon,Nate Galgalo, Venky Jois, Parker Kelly, Ognjen Miljokovic, Garrett Moon, Thomas Reuter and Felix Von Hofe, as well as redshirts Frederik Jorg and Sir Washington.

Six of the players – Hill, Harvey, Jois, Miljkovic, Reuter and Seiferth – were honored on the Big Sky Conference All-Academic Team.

by Whitworth Athletics

Three Whitworth men’s basketball players, along with the entire team, have been recognized for their academic achievements by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) this week.

Colton McCargar (Sr., Richland, Wash., Marketing), Dustin McConnell (Sr., Clarkston, Wash., Kinesiology) and Taylor Farnsworth (Jr., Spokane, Wash., Accounting) were named to the NABC Honors Court, while the entire team picked up the NABC Academic Excellence Award.

All three individuals were starters for the Pirates this season, leading the team to a 23-6 record and into the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. McConnell was named the Northwest Conference Player of the Year, while McCargar was a First Team All-NWC honoree.

In order to be named to the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet three standards of academic criteria: be a junior or senior and a varsity player; post a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year; and the player must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.

As a team the Pirate men are one of only 125 colleges and universities in NCAA and NAIA basketball to receive the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. Whitworth’s combined team GPA for 2013-14 was 3.10.

In order to earn the team award, institutions must average the grade point averages of all men’s student-athletes who competed during the 2013-14 season. That average needs to be 3.0 or better to make the list. Whitworth was the only Northwest Conference member school on the list in 2013-14.
