Fire Restriction in Effect

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS - A stage one fire restriction is in effect for Montana state parks and wildlife management areas.

In Yellowstone and Carbon Counties -- effective immediately -- all campfires are banned at fishing access and wildlife management sites, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. However, you can still use a gas or propane stove in those areas.

Bans are also in effect at Cooney, Pictograph and Yellowstone River State Parks.

Bureau of Land Management Fire Education Specialist Carmen Thomason said with the hottest temperatures of the year, lightning strikes, and a host of other natural factors --  people should be extra careful when using public lands.

"Every time we have any amount of moisture, obviously that increases the vegetation, so the more grass we have, and as we move into August, which will be more hot and dry, we really just need to monitor the conditions," she said.

Montana FWP Information Officer Bob Gibson said even though stage one is the lowest restriction, it's still very important.

"This is the most mild form of all the restrictions, but it's the one that keeps recreational campfires from spreading," he said. "We just don't want campfires, or open fires that can't be shut off, to get away from us in those fishing access sites."

"Obviously, this time of year, folks are out camping, recreating, and we want everyone to enjoy public land and not have to deal with a hazy sky, or smoked filled conditions," Thomason added.

Gibson said the stage one restriction could be upgraded to stage two, which would mean more restrictions, and no fires -- even at designated pits
