Montana Gains Victory Over REAL ID

Posted: Updated:

It's a victory for Montanans over the federal government and the REAL ID act.

That was a move by Congress to create a national standard for identifications.

The department of homeland security originally said it would not accept Montana driver's licenses and ID cards as identification.

That would have meant you couldn't use your driver's license to get on a plane as of today.

But, the federal government says Montana did take steps to protect the integrity of driver's licenses and Ids.

Governor Steve Bullock and Attorney General Tim Fox fought against REAL ID saying they had concerns about the extensive collection of personal and private information.

Back in 2007, the Montana legislature voted unanimously against implementing REAL ID.

Montana still has a few more steps to take to continue to avoid being part of REAL ID and the next deadline will be October 10, 2015.
