Mavericks Duo Rare Three-Sport Standouts

Posted: Updated:
"It's always been important to me to be well-rounded for sure, and all the free time I could be having, I couldn't see myself doing anything else," says Missoula Mavericks infielder Jesson Preston.

The two three sport standouts for the Mavericks are Jesson Preston and Matt McHugh.  Both were stars on the gridiron.,.the hardwood…and the diamond.

"He's athletic, he has a passion for all three games, he's a competitor, and he loves to win.  I think just loves being able to be competitive and playing games year round, and it's great to be able to play with a guy like him," says McHugh of his teammate Preston.

"Matt just has one of the best heads I think out of anyone I know.  He stays level headed-nothing gets by him.  He's very intelligent, and he's a great athlete," adds Preston on McHugh.

Playing three sports means year-round activity, and missing a few important camps because they overlap with whatever season it may be, particularly during the summer.

"If I could do it again, I wouldn't do it any other way, I like being busy and always being able to play games," says McHugh.

While the two say they don't look at themselves as some of the best three sport athletes in the state, their competitive nature does show.

"A lot of pride, I always want to be the best at what I do, ever since I was little, I want to be the best, and I strive to do that," says Preston.

And while many athletes are focusing on a single sport to perfect year round, the Mavericks pair say by playing the three sports, has helped them improve in each one collectively

"I think it benefits by being active and being competitive year round, being able to be in game situations, and staying in shape year round. We're running, and doing physical activities in all three, so it's an easier transition I think from season to season," says McHugh.

"Leadership for sure, my quick hands in baseball helps me out in basketball to get my shot off, and in throwing a football and baseball helps too," adds Preston
