Idaho Football Picked 9th in Sun Belt

The University of Idaho was chosen ninth in the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason coaches’ poll, which was announced today by the league office.

Louisiana-Lafayette was the leading vote-getter with all 11 first-place votes and 121 points in the poll. The Ragin Cajuns were 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the league last year. Arkansas State, also 5-2 in league play (8-5 overall) in 2013, was selected second with 102 points with South Alabama (4-3, 6-6 in 2013) third with

“Louisiana-Lafayette has had a great team the last couple of years,” coach Paul Petrino said. “It’s obvious they’re picked to win it. Arkansas State has a lot of players back and a lot of magazines picked South Alabama second. Those are probably the three teams to beat.”

Petrino, whose team rejoins the Sun Belt Conference in which it last played in 2004, said it’s up to the Vandals to prove themselves.

“Our players have worked really hard all summer and made great strides,” he said. “We’re just excited to be a part of the conference and play everybody and see where we fit at the end.”

In fourth behind South Alabama is Troy (4-3, 6-6) followed by Louisiana-Monroe (4-3, 6-6), Texas State (2-5, 6-6), Appalachian State(4-4, 4-8 in FCS Southern Conference), Georgia Southern (4-4, 7-4 in FCS Southern Conference), Idaho (1-11), Georgia State (0-7, 0-12) and New Mexico State (2-10).
