AppleSox Surprise Yakima Valley Pippins with Extra-Inning Win

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA – The Yakima Valley Pippins were dealt another tough loss on Friday, falling to the Wenatchee Applesox by a final score of 7-4 in 11 innings.

The first four innings displayed an exhilarating pitcher’s duel between Pippins starter Eli Morgan and Applesox hurler Ian Buckles. They kept the game scoreless, while combining to allow just four hits in that span.

In the 5th inning, though, the bats started to come alive for both sides. The Applesox (18-17) got to Morgan, getting seven straight hitters aboard and scoring four times to take a 4-0 lead.

Ryan Yamane got the Pippins (21-14) on the board in the bottom of the 5th, singling in a run to make it 4-1. In the 6th, Vince Fernandez hit his fifth home run of the season to pull the Pippins within one run at 4-3.

After reliever Brandon Williams kept the Applesox scoreless in both the 6th and the 7th, the Pippins tied the game in the bottom of the 7th, as Justin Jacobs singled home JC Snyder to make it 4-4.

The pitcher’s duel that was present early in the game returned in the late innings, as Yakima Valley relievers Kenny Rosenberg and Beau Kerns kept the Applesox scoreless through the 10th, while Wenatchee had Nathan Hadley and Trenton Brooks keep the Pippins off the board.

Wenatchee finally broke through in the 11th against Kerns. After a one-out single for Tyler Frost, AJ Alcantara brought him home with a suicide squeeze to give the Applesox a lead. They would add to it later in the inning on a couple errors by Vince Fernandez and Taylor Snyder to make it 7-4 Applesox.

Despite getting the leadoff man aboard in the bottom of the 11th, Brooks retired the next three to close out the victory and get the Applesox the series win. It is only the third time in the last 11 series that the Pippins have not won at least two games in a three-game set.

Yakima Valley, which is now just three games up on both Wenatchee and Walla Walla, looks to get a game back in the WCL East Division and avoid its first sweep of the year Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
