PATEROS, Wash. -

The wind-driven fire in north central Washington destroyed as many as 100 buildings - most of them homes - according to Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers.

Rogers gave that update Friday morning in his update on the status of the Carlton Complex Fire burning around the communities of Pateros, Twisp and Brewster. The fire erupted Thursday night, and it covered an estimated 169,000 acres - or more than 260 square miles - Friday morning. Widespread power outages were reported throughout the Methow Valley.

More than 100 people spent Thursday night in one of three evacuation centers: Chelan High School in Chelan, Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Omak and the Twisp Grange in Twisp.

The entire town of Pateros was evacuated Thursday night. Brewster also was under Level 3 evacuation orders, as the fire flared up in that area on Friday.

"The entire town of Pateros is burned," said Rogers Friday morning. "We've been down there the whole time and there's a lot [that has been burned].

Sources told KHQ Friday that the fire is "performing like a checkerboard", with flames jumping from spot to spot.

Rogers said he was trying to get a grasp on whether he has enough resources on the ground to protect the communities within his county.

    KETTLE FALLS, Wash. - A Northwest MedStar helicopter air lifted one person to Sacred Heart Medical Center after a car rolled down a steep embankment Monday night, according to Ferry County Sheriff Deputies. The motel is on North Division Street just south of where it intersects with East Euclid Avenue.
