Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Mont. -

An 81-year-old man from Atlanta, Georgia is dead after drowning this afternoon in the Stillwater River about 3 miles south of Columbus at the “Beartooth Drop.”

The Stillwater County Sheriff's Office says dispatch heard from a caller around 3:30 p.m., who said an older man was in the water. Witnesses report he was not wearing a life jacket and fell out when the raft he was in, with at least two other people, hit a wave. A woman in the raft, who also fell out, was able to swim to safety. Deputies say the victim was fishing at the time of the accident. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.
