More Montanans Signing Up for Health Insurance

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

More Montanans now have health insurance, according to the Montana Insurance Commissioners office. Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen says preliminary figures show more than 30,000 people signed up for insurance in 2014.

Previously she says about 20% of the state was uninsured. That percentage is now about 16.9%. Lindeen says, "Obviously you had a lot of Montanans who really couldn't afford coverage who now can afford to purchase private health insurance in the new market place and can afford it because they're getting some help based on their income."

Lindeen's office surveyed the state's insurance companies after the national enrollment period ended in the spring. She says the increase also included enrollments in Medicaid and Healthy Montana Kids.
