KENNEWICK, WA - A woman in the Benton County Jail overdosed on heroin this week. Doctors admitted her to a local hospital. Deputies said it's not a very common issue but they take it very seriously.

It happened on Tuesday morning just after 7 a.m. An officer doing rounds discovered a 26-year-old woman ill in her cell. It appeared she had overdosed. After paramedics arrived and deputies talked with other inmates it was determined the woman had overdosed on heroin.

Medics used Narcan, another drug that counteracts narcotics, and got her to come to. From there, medics took her to a local hospital where she was admitted.

"It doesn't happen very often. I mean, of course, contraband and drugs are something that we very much watch out for in this facility. Because where there's a will, there's a way and people will typically try and figure out that way," said Lieutenant Josh Shelton with the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

District court released the woman from custody, for now, but she may face more charges when she goes back to court because of this drug incident.
