Former Coug Johnson Named To Double-A All Star Game

by WSU Athletics

ALTOONA, Pa. – Former Washington State outfielder Kyle Johnson is an Eastern League All-Star. The Double-A circuit’s All-Star Clash is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Pacific, Wednesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The game will be broadcast via the web on MiLB.tv and online via the TuneIn Radio App.

Johnson is currently batting .281 with 19 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 36 RBI and eight stolen bases. He is a member of the East squad after being selected by a fan vote.

Selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the New York Mets acquired Johnson in a trade for MLB outfielder Collin Cowgill last season.

In his three-year professional career, the Post Falls, Idaho native is batting .286 with 59 stolen bases in 228 games. A four-year letterwinner, (2009-12), Johnson posted a .280 batting average and stole 30 bases in 39 attempts as a Cougar. He was a member of Washington State’s back-to-back NCAA postseason teams (2009-10).

It is the second-straight season a Cougar alumnus has been voted to the game by the fans. Last season, Jim Murphy (2005-08) was selected while representing the Reading Fightin Phils, a Philadelphia Phillies’ affiliate. Murphy is currently in Triple-A with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
