Fire Officials Learn From Lolo Fire

Posted: Updated:
LOLO -

The Lolo community gathered Tuesday night to reflect on the Lolo Complex Fire and learn how to protect homes in the event of another catastrophic wildfire.

At the meeting, fire officials talked about putting in a new universal plan whenever a fire threatens people and homes. Up to now, incident managers have taken fires on a case by case basis.

Lolo National Forest fire prevention specialist Chris Johnson says the new policy should be in place before the fires get going in earnest this season.

"I think it's important this time of year for every person in Missoula county to make sure their home is prepared well before fires come," said Johnson.

The new two-step evacuation procedure is being drafted now. It would apply to all of Missoula county.

The first step is preparing to evacuate, and the second step is actually getting out of the affected area.
