Historical Walkerville Church Gets a New Roof

WALKERVILLE -

After months of donations, a church in Walkerville is getting a new roof.

"It means a great deal just to save the church and save those pictures and everything inside” said Walkerville Mayor John Ries.

It was a labor of love and a campaign so to speak to preserve a historical landmark. St. Lawrence O'Toole church was the first Catholic Church in the area built in 1897. A weather worn roof posed a threat to the inside furnishings and architecture which includes original stained glass and painted artwork dating back to 1906. These precious paintings are also known as frescoes.

"If the water keeps seeping in and damages the plaster those frescoes are going to just fall off, I mean they're painted right onto the plaster so if the plaster falls there goes the frescoes which are irreplaceable” said Butte Central Elementary school teacher Pam Olson.

It was Pam Olson who decided to turn this quest for a new roof into a classroom project. Her students sent out a plea to the community asking for a simple one dollar donation.

A total of $27,000 has been raised so far and over $18,000 of that came from the elementary students' fundraiser. But it wasn't only monetary donations that helped save the roof. Vaughn Taylor, owner of V.Taylor Enterprises is the contractor who bid on the roof job and is donating all of the labor for free. He says he would like to thank his crew for putting in all their hard work and he's glad to be taking part in this.

"We're going to be doing tear out today, hopefully we'll start getting shingles up tomorrow, split the crews up and get the other half on there. So I’m just thankful to be part of the project you know and have a chance to give back to the community because that's what Butte's about."

The new roof is expected to be complete in the next five to six days.
