Martin Seiferth will return to his native Germany for an opportunity to play professional basketball for Alba in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in 2014-15, EWU head men’s basketball coach Jim Hayford announced Monday (July 7).

Seiferth signed a two year agreement with the Berlin-based club, after previously playing for Alba’s youth teams. He helped his club to the U19 German title in 2009.

The Berlin native was on EWU’s Dean’s List this past spring, and he will complete requirements for his communications studies degree this summer. He was twice named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team and has a 3.33 grade point average at Eastern.

"We are very happy for Martin to realize his dream of playing professional basketball for one of the top teams in his home country,” said Hayford. “I am even more proud of his great work in the classroom and earning his degree this summer.  We had hoped that he would return for graduate school at EWU, but I agree this is too good of an opportunity for him to pass up.”

As a junior, Seiferth averaged 21.5 minutes, 7.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest while starting 27 of the 31 games he played in the 2013-14 season. He led the Big Sky in field goal percentage (.667) and was fourth in blocked shots and 11th in rebounding.

He finishes his Eastern career with the school record for career shooting percentage with a mark of .644 to rank ahead of Ron Cox at .629 from 1974-77. In his 62-game EWU career (58 as a starter), the Oregon transfer averaged 7.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game. His 112 career blocked shots rank second in school history behind the 115 of teammate Venky Jois.

With Eastern having no seniors a year ago, Seiferth will now be the lone starter lost from a team that finished 15-16 overall and 10-10 in the Big Sky Conference. Frederik Jorg, a 7-1 center, was one of two Eagle redshirts last season, and the Eagles signed 6-8, 215-pound junior college transfer Kyle Reid. Five incoming freshmen and nine total letterwinners – including the 6-foot-8 Jois and 6-7 Ognjen Miljkovic round out Hayford’s squad.

"With this possibility in mind, we added some excellent new front court players to join Venky, Fred and Ognjen,” added Hayford of Seiferth’s decision to turn pro.
