Investigation of Police-Involved Shooting at Sonic

Posted: Updated:

Police continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning in the Heights.

According to Billings Police, it happened at the Sonic on Main Street. Employees say a man was hanging around the parking lot before they opened. The man tried to get into Sonic behind an employee coming in for the day. The report says the employee told the man he could not come in and would have to wait. The man left after awhile.

Around 8 am, a Sonic employee then went across the street to get some supplies from Albertsons. When he returned, the employee says the same man in a car stopped him in the Albertsons' parking log and demanded money. Police say the employee ran away and that's when the man fired at least one shot from a semi-automatic handgun.

A nearby officer, Shane Weinreis, on patrol says he heard what he thought was fireworks going off and went to investigate. The officer saw the employee running and also the suspect shooting at that employees from a car.

The suspect drove around the back of Sonic and the police officer followed. The Billings Police Chief says he believes the suspect fired one shot at the officer through the windshield, and that's when the officer got out and returned fire with multiple shots.

The chief says the suspect took cover but he also believe the suspect's gun jammed and either threw it away or put it down.

The officer then went after the suspect and tackled him. The officer believes the man appeared to be on drugs.

Weinreis is said to be doing fine and as part of police procedure is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Streets that run for several blocks, without a single street light. It is a dark reality many residents throughout the Magic City face when the sun goes down. Leo Robinson lives on Monad Rd., east of 24th Street. He said if street lights were placed on Monad, safety for everyone would improve. Terry Smith, City Traffic Engineer, said the city is more than willing to work with anyone, on any street, which lacks street lights.
