Seattle university shooting video release blocked

SEATTLE (AP) - A King County Superior Court commissioner has blocked local news media from obtaining surveillance video taken during last month's deadly shooting at Seattle Pacific University.

The Seattle Times reports that Commissioner Carlos Velategui said releasing the video "creates a huge public danger" by telling others how to commit a crime on campus. He issued a restraining order on Thursday.

A lawyer representing the media said news outlets are entitled to the video under the state public records law.

A lawyer representing the victims said the release would violate victims' privacy rights. He says the graphic video shows the gunman shooting students and pointing a firearm at others.

Aaron Rey Ybarra is accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old student and wounding two others. He has pleaded not guilty.

    Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been found in Boundary County. This is the first detection of the virus in northern Idaho.In 2006, Idaho led the nation in West Nile illnesses with almost 1,000 infections, which contributed to 23 deaths. In 2013, 40 human cases were reported in 16 counties, and there were two deaths.

    The U.S. Court of Appeals turns down former Spokane Police Officer Karl Thompson. His lawyers asked the court for a new trial due to what they called "jury misconduct."Thompson was convicted by a Federal Jury in 2006 of using excessive force against Otto Zhem, and then later lying to investigators about it. Zhem died from these injuries.
