Bright Lights, Explosions of July 4th Stress Some Veterans

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - The bright lights and explosions that accompany the Fourth of July holiday can be difficult for some members of the community to handle.

Vietnam veteran Dan Gallagher says fireworks can cause stress for vets, especially those who have PTSD.

Gallagher says the fireworks he dislikes the most are the small firecrackers and the types that let off a flash of light and an explosion, because they sound like rifle fire and bombs.

He says many veterans begin to have flashbacks or become depressed during the Fourth of July.

"It's not a matter of veterans saying, don't use fireworks, it's a matter of just common courtesy and consideration and just being practical about it," Gallagher said.

Most fireworks are illegal inside Missoula city limits, with the exception of sparklers and poppers.

City officials say fines and court fees for violators are hundreds of dollars.

After a dismal winter, the U.S. economy sprang back to life in the April-June quarter, growing at a fast 4 percent annual rate on the strength of higher consumer and business spending.
After a grim start to 2014, the U.S. economy has rebounded with vigor and should show renewed strength into next year.
