Sale Of West Glacier Land And Businesses Finalized

Posted: Updated:
WEST GLACIER -

A Glacier National Park concessioner ousted by Xanterra last year buys up much of West Glacier.

They can't talk dollars yet, but Glacier Park, Inc. finalized the sale from the Lundgren family who have owned the 200 some acres and businesses near the Park for almost seven decades.

GPI had lost the concessions contract, which surprised some people and even made a few pretty mad. They are still in the park, though, and now they're going to grow up and out.

"I'm personally excited as is our team," said Ron Cadrette, the vice president and manager of GPI.

The sale was finalized Tuesday and includes the West Glacier Mercantile, Restaurant and Bar, the 32-room Motel and Cabins, Gift Shop, Shirt Company, and Gas Station.

Wrapped into that is 3.8 acres of land in the park: Apgar Village Lodge, the Cedar Tree Gift Shop, and some staff housing.

That's a lot to take care of, and GPI already owns and runs seven lodges between Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada like the St. Mary Lodge, the Glacier Park Lodge, the Motel Lake McDonald, and Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish to name a few.

For now, Cadrette says they've got enough on their plate that nothing will really change right away.

"We've been focused so much on the 2014 season that we haven't had time or energy to develop plans for the future. Certainly there will be some forthcoming," said Cadrette.

When Xanterra won the Park concessions contract over GPI, it caused some commotion, even an online petition in protest, but Cadrette says that and this aren't connected.

"We've been looking at West Glacier for several years now, even before not winning the contract in Park concessions," said Cadrette.

For these first few weeks in transition, the Lundgren family will help out, but eventually they will totally hand over the reins.

GPI has served travelers for more than three decades and is owned by Viad.
