Dragon Boat Brings Flathead More Than $2 Million

Posted: Updated:
BIGFORK -

New numbers say last year's Dragon Boat raked in more than $2 million for the Flathead, and they're on track for more of the same this year.

This will be Dragon Boat's third year in Bigfork.

Data from the Institute of Tourism and Recreation Research at the University of Montana put it in the top ten dragon boat festivals in North America.

Last year, some 2,000 people came out to Flathead Lake Lodge to row and triple that went just to watch.

This year, more than 60 teams have already signed up, well on the way to hitting the more than 90 teams that competed in 2013.

"We're excited to have many returning teams, but also some new teams from Canada. Also, many local teams have registered, again, some returning and some new," said Diane Medler, the director of the Kalispell Convention and Visitor Bureau.

Even though it's only a two-day event, Medler says the average person came and stayed for more than four days.

This year, races begin a week later than usual, starting September 13.
