State Receives $5.125M Grant to Help Long-term Unemployment

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - Montana has received a $5.125 million grant to give the long-term unemployed an opportunity to earn money while learning skills they need to find a permanent job.

The new grant will rely heavily on the use of on-the-job training and apprenticeships as well as re-training out-of-work Montanans.

Gov. Steve Bullock says it will build upon the relationships that were established under a $25 million grant last year that brought together 13 Montana colleges and more than 80 employers in the state to develop curricula that combine the skills being taught at the colleges with the skills most in demand in the workforce.

Under the U.S. Department of Labor grant, the long-term unemployed are defined as those who have been out of work for at least 27 weeks since the recession of December 2007 to June 2009.
