Missoula Explosive Specialists Respond To Suspicious Package

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

A suspicious package found at the UPS store in Kalispell did not appear to be explosive.

An explosives specialist team, that traveled from Missoula, examined the package on Friday night, and while it did not appear to be explosive, Kalispell Police will continue to investigate what is in it.

Kalispell Police received the call of a suspicious package around 3:30 on Friday afternoon at the UPS store on Meridian Avenue and blocked off the street shortly after 4 p.m.

Officers said that the odd package was wrapped in tin foil, and they haven't been able to figure out where it came from or where it was headed.

All roads that were cordoned off around the area reopened around 9:30 p.m., and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

We'll update you with any new information as soon as it becomes available.

******Previous Story******

An explosives specialist team out of Missoula is in Kalispell Friday night, after police got a call from the UPS store on Meridian about a strange-looking package.

A UPS employee sent them a photo.

Officials blocked off the street shortly after 4:00 p.m., and continue to keep people about 100 yards away.

"This is a little different than a bomb threat. No one called in and threatened anything at this point. It was just a package that they found," explained Brett Corbett, a patrol sergeant with Kalispell police.

They got the call a little before 3:30 p.m. One officer said the odd package had tin foil on it, but even weirder-- they haven't been able to figure out where it came from or where it's headed.

About four highway patrol officers have been keeping cars off the stretch of Meridian Road between Liberty Street and US 93.

At last check, four Kalispell police officers and one sheriff's deputy had set up camp near the store, to work with the explosive specialists.

The fire department has been waiting in the wings just in case this turns out to be real.

For everyone without a badge, this has meant a lot of waiting. UPS drivers have been told to just hang tight, and several people who live nearby have had to just sit tight for hours.

"I want to go home. They don't let me go home. I said I need to go home and park my car in some way, but they don't let me walk home either, and I need to go home to take my medicine two or three hours ago," said Georgette Foster, who lives near the UPS store and had to evacuate.

No one knows yet how long this waiting will last, but officers have to pull out all the stops to make sure no one is in any real danger.

We'll of course keep you posted on air and online.
