Doctor and Patient To Run Heart and Sole Together

BILLINGS -

The Heart and Sole Run is coming up this Saturday.

Clay Green is getting ready for the Heart and Sole Run, an event promoting heart health.

"I had hoped I could sort of make it through life without open heart surgery,” Clay said. “I had been told earlier by other cardiologists that I would need it but I was still I guess in denial that I wouldn't need it."

Clay was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and during a check-up, his doctor discovered an aortic aneurysm developing. That’s when he met Dr. Jason Fitzgerald, a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Vincent Healthcare, for heart surgery. "Once I came out on the other side, I realized the scariest part of it was my mind,” Clay said. “You know, once you sort of surrender to the good hands that you're in, the care that you're in, it was just a matter of taking it one step at a time to get better.”

He’s continuing his active lifestyle now with a valve replacement and participating in the Heart and Sole Run with Dr. Fitzgerald.

"He had this heart surgery and he's back to a normal active life and I think it's really an inspiration for people to see that just because they have heart conditions that they can be treated and they can live normal healthy, active lives," said Dr. Fitzgerald.

Clay says running is new for him, but helps him stay in shape, especially for his drumming. He’s excited to run with the doctor who helped him. "It’s a beautiful thing,” Clay said. “I don't know how else to put this. It’s a very great honor for me."

Clay says he plans to run in the Montana half-marathon in September.
