Whitefish Physical Therapist Qualifies For Ironman Championships

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH - A Whitefish physical therapist walks the walk, literally.

Jason Falcon, 34, has competed in Ironman triathlons since 2008, and last Sunday he qualified for the half Ironman world championships in Quebec.

A 1.2 mile swim, 56 miles of biking, and 13.1 miles on foot-- falcon did it all in only four hours and nineteen minutes in Kansas on Sunday. He finished twenty-eighth out of more than 1,000, and second in his age group of about 145 guys.

"I'm excited because you bring that upon yourself. I love the competition," said Falcon.

Falcon daylights as a physical therapist. By the time he starts seeing patients, he's already swam for an hour, and when he's done for the day he goes back out to run or bike.

Rehabbing from an injury with Falcon, or any physical therapist, can be miserable, but Falcon knows misery. He logs as much as 100 miles biking in Glacier National Park just on the weekends.

"It proves to you that what you do, what you practice every day in your profession overlaps into what you do for your hobby or for training," explained Falcon.

The 20 Ironmans he's done so far have taken him all around the world: France, Cozumel, Cabo, Utah. In the next couple months, Falcon is going to two more full Ironmans, that's 140.6 miles total, in Couer d'Alene and Boulder in the hopes of making it to the championships in Hawaii.

"When I get those patients that want to come in and want to train for a half marathon or a full marathon they know that you've been in their shoes," said Falcon.

At the half Ironman championships in September, people from some 50 countries will be racing, some as old as 70.

You have to sign up almost a year in advance for an Ironman competition because they actually do fill up quickly.
