BNSF Says 2013 Was Its Safest Year Ever

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH - Despite some fiery wreckage that made headlines, BNSF railway company says 2013 goes down in the record books for fewest accidents.

The Associated Press reports that last year alone, oil trains in the US and Canada were involved in at least eight major accidents. That includes an explosion of Bakken crude in Quebec that killed 47 people.

BNSF spokesman Matt Jones says about two million carloads passed through Montana last year.

Jones says 2013 actually marks a low point in main line derailments.

"We're proud to say that we're coming off 2013, was the safest year in the history of BNSF and the safest year for the industry as a whole," said Jones.

While hazardous materials go through Montana, and even Whitefish, Jones couldn't give out specifics, claiming it would be a threat to security.
