Jeffrey Lackman Trial Begins Butte

Posted: Updated:
The trial of a Butte man accused of murder began Tuesday, with attorneys painting two different pictures of what happened the night of August 5 when Mark Partelow was shot to death on Casey St.

Jeffrey Lackman, 24, is charged with deliberate homicide after court documents say he shot and killed Mark Partelow, 46, after using meth earlier in the day.

Lackman's trial started Tuesday morning with jury selection, before prosecutors and defense attorneys gave their opening statements to the court in the afternoon.

To understand the crime, attorneys say, you have to understand the world Lackman, Partelow and others involved with the case were living in: A world of drugs, money, women and guns.

County prosecutors say on the night of Aug. 5, Lackman went to Partelow's house to collect things Partelow owed him. They say Lackman got within two inches of Partelow's face, started threatening him, and then shot Partelow.

Lackman's defense team paints a different picture, saying he and his girlfriend went to go collect possessions, such as a Playstation, they left at at Partelow's house. Then Partelow and his girlfriend supposedly attacked Lackman, backing him into a fence, and hitting him multiple times.

They say Lackman was forced to defend himself using a weapon.

Following the shooting, documents say Lackman fled the scene with Juan Jose Romero until they were pulled over for speeding and arrested in Musselshell Co. near Roundup.

Court resumes Wednesday morning at nine. The trial is taking in place in front of Butte-Silverbow District Judge Brad Newman, who expects the jury to have a verdict by Friday.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
