SALUTING THE BRAVE: Sprague Man One Of Five Troops Killed In Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE:

KABUL, Afghanistan- Friends and family confirm for KHQ that 22-year-old Justin Clouse was one of the five American troops killed in southern Afghanistan and that he is from the small town of Sprague, WA. Sprague is southwest of Spokane, along Interstate 90 and according to the 2010 census, the town has around 450 people.

Latest Update From Associated Press:
KABUL, Afghanistan - A senior police official in southern Afghanistan is providing some details of an apparent friendly-fire airstrike that killed five U.S. troops.

The official says U.S. and coalition troops had been taking part in a joint operation yesterday with Afghan forces. Afterward, the troops came under attack from the Taliban, and called in air support.

He says the airstrike killed an Afghan soldier in addition to the five Americans.

A Pentagon spokesman says in a statement that investigators "are looking into the likelihood that friendly fire was the cause."

With just months remaining before U.S. combat troops leave Afghanistan, this was one of the worst friendly-fire incidents involving U.S. and coalition troops since the start of the nearly 14-year war.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - An apparent friendly fire incident may have killed five Americans troops in southern Afghanistan.

That's according to a U.S. defense official who would provide no other details. An Afghan official said it happened in southern Zabul province.

A statement from NATO says the casualties happened during a "security operation" after the soldiers "came into contact with enemy sources." A senior police official said the coalition soldiers may have been killed when they called for close air support.

If confirmed, it would be one of the worst cases of coalition-on-coalition friendly fire during the nearly 14 year war.

In 2002, four Canadian soldiers were killed when an American F-16 jet fighter dropped a bomb on a group near a night firing exercise in southern Kandahar.
