PROSSER, WA - A cup of coffee and a simple conversation, that is what a group of seniors in Prosser have been enjoying together for the last four decades.

The group meets six days a week, Monday through Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Cafe Villa in downtown. They said it is the best way to get up and out of the house.

Anywhere from 10 to 20 seniors in their 70's, 80's and even 90's meet for coffee. Many of them are widows or widowers. They enjoy laughing and drinking coffee but also caring for each other.

"Its just a wonderful time to get together, we do not talk politics, we do not talk religion and we try not to gossip," said Virginia Bradbury.

And those are the only rules.

"We pay a $2 tip so we roll dice to see who pays the $2," said Bill Owens.

Besides taking part in the dice game of course, to see whose turn it is to pay the tip.

Coffee is just one dollar but back in the 70's when the coffee group started it was a whomping 10 cents.

"Starts the day off on a happy note," Owens continued.

Group members check on others that do not show up for coffee. And when someone is sick they bring them food and make sure they are doing okay.

"We celebrate birthdays and anniversaries," Bradbury explained.

They also wear red on Fridays.

"We come down and embarrass each other, have a cup of coffee tell jokes if we can remember them," Jack Laws said.

Coffee group members agree that life without a morning brew with friends..."It would be pretty dull," Owens said.

Group members said anyone is welcome to join them.

They hope to keep the coffee group going for years to come.
