High Water Marker Reminds People Of 100 Year Flood

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA FALLS - This Monday will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the flood of 1964, and people still gawk at how high the water got.

From the bottom of the Flathead River to the top of the water along the banks in Columbia Falls, the water rose more than 25 feet.

Today, USGS and the National Weather Service showed off a marker they put up to remind people about the biggest flood to hit the Valley in 100 years.

Thirty people died because of it and Montana paid out about $55 million dollars in damages.

"It just reminds me that mother nature can go crazy and of course I was a young person at that time. I just never thought that it could happen. It just didn't seem right," remembered Donald Barnhart, who was 12 when the flood hit.

Thursday night, the Flathead Conservation District is having its own get together to remember the flood.

It starts at 7:00 p.m. at Flathead Valley Community College.
