They say roller derby is a combination of hockey, basketball, and speed skating.
"It's like playing chess with bricks being constantly being thrown at you,” said Rjika Weis, a blocker. “You're constantly being hit."
Roller derby is physical, and while there's a lot of contact, it's also a sport that requires great strategy.
"We field four blockers and one jammer for every jam,” Weis said. “Our four blockers are working to help our jammer get through and stop the other jammer from getting through."
The way it works is a jammer tries to skate past the blockers of the other team.
If they get through, then her team receives points.
"If our jammer gets through and past the other blockers, then she gets a point for every blocker that she passes," Weis said.
The sport may be tough, but the girls involved play for one reason to have fun.
"We take it seriously,” said Tornado Juice, a jammer on the team. “We train really hard. We love each other. We have all become really great friends so we're involved outside of derby as well. Everyone is getting some personal growth from the sport and we really encourage each other."
"It's a whole new relationship, or a different kind of relationship that you develop with ladies that you're playing a sport with and being competitive with," Weis said.
The Gallatin Roller Girlz next bout will take place on June 21st, at the Haynes Pavilion in Bozeman.?
