COLVILLE, Wash. -

Near Colville, there is a three-acre field with a message that can only be seen from the skies.

Mowing the lawn is typical on a nice day like this, but what is not typical is what Bud Brannon does with his lawn mower he calls 'Old Betsy.'

“This little critter is my best friend because it starts up easy,” Bud Brannon said.

After firing up 'Old Betsy,' Bud went to work.

”I built it in different stages because I didn't know how I was doing it or what I was doing,” Bud said. “You can’t see anything.”

You cannot see anything from the ground because the grass is tall and the field is anything but flat.

“It is a long walk,” Bud explained.

Also, because of an old back injury, pushing the lawn mower around the yellow hose he used as an outline was not easy.

“I can't push a mower, so I drag it an awful lot,” Bud said.

It took him nine days and countless hours with a few breaks in between, but Bud was finally able to write a message in the grass to his daughter-in-law who is a paratrooper stationed in North Carolina. The message reads, “Welcome home C. Brannon. Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Love, Bud and Pen.”

“The hardest thing was getting the paratrooper just right with crossed arms, butt out, and knees bent,” Bud explained.

However, because it can only be seen from the skies, he had to rent an airplane to make sure it looked just right.

“I didn't want to get embarrassed and embarrass my daughter in law,” Bud said.

If it was not right, he would have had to erase it.

“I had a full tank of gas ready to mow the whole thing down,” Bud said.

Thankfully, his hard work paid off and his labor of love can be seen from miles away. Bud’s daughter-in-law was able to see the message. He said she had tears in her eyes when she saw it because it meant so much.
