Coming into this season the Hellgate Knights were unsure how it would go. They had a lot of inexperienced players and even they are a little surprised their heading into the state tournament with the number one seed out of the west.
"It's bad to say but my expectations were pretty low for this year, but I was pleasantly surprised with how we have been playing and we really came together as a team at the beginning of the season and showed everyone that they were wrong about us," said Senior Outfielder Frankie Needles.
The Knights have a lot of players on their team who have never experienced a state tournament before and they are anxious to get to Great Falls.
"We're beyond excited, it's crazy and we didn't really know what to expect out of this team because we are so young. So just to make it there, because last year we didn't make it, so it's just crazy," said Freshman Infielder Adessa Gagner.
The Knights will play Billings Skyview in the first round who they split with in the regular season.
"Well it's exciting for us, we have seen them twice so we have a pretty good understanding of them, granted that was early in the season. We feel like we have come a long way since last time we played them, we are playing much more confident and really gelled as a team so we are excited for the tournament and can't wait to get going," said Head Coach Lisa Macki.
"I think it's going to be a really good game we definitely have to show up mentally and physically and I think it will be a good battle and of we win that one then we will be on a good path to the championship game," said Needles.
Coach Macki says her young squad needs to play loose and worry free to be successful at state.
"It's what we've looked for all season we are here and now it's just a matter of playing the game we love, relaxing and what will be will be, I think that's a key for us," said Macki.
The Class AA tournament is in Great Falls and the Knights play Skyview at 1:00 on Thursday.
