Police Deal With Animals Left In Hot Cars

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL - Police are starting to field calls about pets locked in hot cars.

Kalispell's been getting reports of animals left in parked cars for a few weeks now.

Cats and dogs have to wear a fur coat every day and that can be really uncomfortable a few months out of the year. It's especially painful sitting in a locked car on a hot day. Even if it's just 70 degrees Fahrenheit outside, in just 10 minutes the car can get to almost 90 degrees.

"It's hot and you can't do this anymore and some of them just don't quite get it, so it's more educational than to beat them up," said Mike Hall, the animal warden with the Kalispell police department.

Hall has already been out on four calls about animals left in cars. More often than not, it's in the parking lot of one of the big box stores just north of Kalispell.

He hasn't had to actually break into a car for a few years. He normally has to wait for the owner to come back out to let them know that they're putting their furry friend in a bad spot. Sometimes the news doesn't sit well with the owner, or even the people who called it in. Hall says he's had to request backup before because of a confrontation.

"It's a very, very passionate issue with people," said Hall, "They get very upset about it, and when people come out of the store and they find all the people around their car, they get going at it."

The solution, according to Hall, is simple.

"The best thing I can recommend to them is leave the dog at home," said Hall.

Hall also adds that it's a good idea to wait a few minutes for the owner to come back before calling police about an animal left in a car.
