United Veterans Council Hosts 11 Memorial Day Events

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - The United Veterans Council of Missoula and Ravalli Counties organized 11 Memorial Day ceremonies throughout Missoula on Monday, honoring every branch of the military.

Dozens of community members gathered on the Missoula Courthouse lawn to remember those who have lost their lives in the armed forces and to recognize those who still serve today.

"It's a day of remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country," said Sgt. Samuel Pascal Redfern.

Redfern served 12 years in the U.S. Army, including one combat tour in Iraq. On Memorial Day, Redfern said he pays tribute to four good friends who died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We who still live owe it to our fallen comrades to live and to live well," Redfern said.

Veteran of the Korean War, Gerald Nelson, said Memorial Day is also a time to thank those who waited for servicemen and women to make their way back home after war.

"I was married and my wife waited patiently for my return," Nelson said.

Ron Scharfe said it makes him feel proud to see the community show support for veterans and current members of the military.

He added, "I'm just wishing that all my buddies were still here, it's just the way life is I guess."

Monday's 11 ceremonies marked the 87th annual Memorial Day celebration in Missoula.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
